Chemicals

Response to regulatory changes from 30 days to 1, SDS update errors down to zero

Fine chemicals group: a safety compliance Agent that gets SDS and regulatory changes to the shop floor the same day

Challenge

The group handles thousands of chemicals, and safety data sheets, hazardous chemical regulations and transport and import/export rules change constantly. The EHS team tracked regulatory updates manually and revised SDSs by hand, so response was slow, and plant staff looking for safety information had to dig through thick binders.

The group wanted the shop floor to know about a regulatory change the same day it happened, and to pass third-party audits.

Approach

With a compliance knowledge base at the core, we launched three Agents: regulatory tracking, SDS maintenance and shop-floor Q&A.

  • Regulatory tracking: domestic and international regulatory databases monitored daily, with changes relevant to the group's products identified and an impact analysis generated
  • SDS maintenance: multilingual SDS revisions drafted from formulation data and regulatory requirements, with format and classification checked automatically
  • Shop-floor Q&A: operators scan a code to get storage, handling, PPE and emergency requirements for that material
  • Audit preparation: the compliance evidence chain is archived automatically, and third-party audit packs export with one click

Architecture highlights

Formulation data is processed in isolation on the internal network, and SDS generation uses only de-identified ingredient information. The regulation library is versioned by source and effective date, so every impact analysis traces back to a specific clause.

Customer feedback

The biggest risk in safety compliance is information that never reaches the floor. Now a line worker scans a code and has it faster than I can find the file.
